Home builders group helps spruce-up Women’s Center September 14, 2014 By JACKIE STARK - Journal Staff Writer ([email protected]) , Mining Journal MARQUETTE - The Upper Peninsula Home Builders Association gave the Marquette Women's Center a present Saturday for its 40th birthday in the form of much-needed building upgrades. "It's really thrilling for us because otherwise it basically wouldn't get done and we'd like to keep the building looking nice and in good repair," said Sally May, one of the founding mothers of the center. "These guys are great, really. It's so nice of them to take a Saturday. They work so hard over the week, especially this time of the year when it's construction season." UPHBA board member Carol Hicks said all the materials for the project were donated, largely by the association and The Window Store in Marquette, as was all the labor. More than a dozen association members showed up between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday to lend their professional expertise upgrading the wraps around the windows on the front of the building on South Front Street, as well as to install a privacy fence that will hide the utility meters on the side of the building. | "We always do a service project every year ... and it's just a very worthy cause," said Hicks, who also serves on the Women's Center's property management committee. "This women's center in Marquette is the oldest one in the state of Michigan, the longest operational women's center in the state of Michigan so it serves a lot of need." May said these types of service projects are vital to keeping the center's capital projects manageable. "It's tremendously important because we are always struggling financially," May said. "Our priorities, obviously, are to pay our staff and to help our clients through our staff, to keep the lights on and the gas flowing. We have to feed our clients at Harbor House and so on, so things kind of go by the wayside, like fixing up the building." Hicks said the association likes to help out the community by offering professional building expertise. "We like to give our time - it's another way of giving," Hicks said. "The home builders, we're all here to give our skills and our talents because these builders can build anything." Jackie Stark can be reached at 906-228-2500, ext. 242.
