About Us
The Women's Center provides 24/7 emergency-intervention and crisis-intervention services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence, dating violence and stalking in Marquette and Alger Counties, providing individual/group counseling and advocacy through programs that Protect, Educate, Advocate, Counsel and Empower (PEACE). For 40 more than years, it has been our mission to support survivors, to increase public awareness and to change the attitudes which allow these violent crimes to continue.
Harbor House is a haven for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. It also provides outreach services to survivors who do not stay in the shelter. It is the only shelter of its kind in Marquette and Alger Counties and usually operates at capacity. All shelter and support services are free to those who receive them. Services are paid for though fundraising, grants, community donations and income from PakRatz Resale Store. The need is real and urgent. Please consider donating today. The Women's Center was established in 1973 and was officially incorporated as a private non-profit in November of 1980. The Women's Center is the longest standing domestic and sexual violence service provider in the State of Michigan and one of the oldest in the nation.
Our vision and mission for equality, non-violence and empowering survivors of domestic and sexual violence, dating violence and stalking has held strong for forty years because of the dedication of board members, employees, volunteers, collaborative partners, supportive community members and generous donors. We work hand in hand with collaborative partners to establish community coordinated response efforts that enhance survivor safety and promote offender accountability. The Women's Center also works to educate and encourage sensitive public awareness and works relentlessly to change the attitudes that allow these violent crimes to continue. Through advocacy, counseling, support groups and providing a safe haven at Harbor House, the Women's Center continues its mission to work towards a world free from violence. Our deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to help support the Women’s Center and its mission over the years. These generous donors include: individuals, area foundations, businesses, religious congregations, social and fraternal organizations, student groups from Northern Michigan University, state and federal granting organizations and national corporations operating in the area. All of these gifts help provide vital services to women and children in crisis in Marquette and Alger Counties. Special thanks to organizations and individuals who have held fundraisers and hosted informational programs in our behalf.
