The Women's Center in Marquette is accustomed to giving, but Thursday they were on the receiving end of a generous donation. A check of almost $2,000 dollars from the Marquette Unitarian Universalist congregation and singer Susan Warner was presented to the agency.
For the past several years, the church has held a fundraiser for every October to donate to the Women's Center. Anne Stark said, "Well, the Women's Center has such an incredibly important mission in our community and touches so many lives and they help, it's really not just the women they help but their entire families."
Phyllis Loonsfoot, the director of the Women's Center and the Harbor House, said "This check that we received today is just another example of the generous community support that we and other non-profits have in this community. This is a very giving community and we all appreciate the support so much."
The story behind the donation from Susan Warner is actually a funny one. Anne Stark was at the Hiawatha Festival with her husband attending Susan Warner's concert. As Warner was throwing out vegetables to the crowd, all that she got locally, Stark got hit in the face with an onion. Warner offered her a private concert, but instead, Stark decided she would rather have a concert at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Marquette benefiting the Women's Center. People in the area donated their frequent flyer miles to help Warner fly to Marquette. Members of the church and the Women's Center are grateful for Warner's donations to the community.
